A FELLOWSHIP TO BE AWARDED TO A FIRST-YEAR
STUDENT INTERESTED IN SEEKING A CAREER IN MUNICIPAL MANAGEMENT.
Award: $6,000 (one award)
$3,000 to be paid for summer internship; $3,000 during second year of LBJ
School
Fellowship Requirement:

Applicant is to furnish evidence that the student will be accepted for a
summer internship in a municipal or county government in the United States.
Austin City Manager, Toby Futrell, has guaranteed a summer internship in
either the city manager’s office or the director of finance’s
office for the student selected for the fellowship. Part-time employment
in the same or similar position with the City of Austin during the student’s
second year of school is subject to the student’s satisfactory performance
of the summer internship. THIS FELLOWSHIP, HOWEVER, IS NOT RESTRICTED TO
INTERNSHIP OR EMPLOYMENT WITH THE CITY OF AUSTIN. APPLICANTS WHO SELECT
OTHER JURISDICTIONS WILL BE GIVEN EQUAL CONSIDERATION IN AWARDING OF THE
FELLOWSHIP.
Brief Description of Activities and Assignment:
The application is to set forth the proposed activities of the student working
in the city government selected. The Fellowship assumes continuation of
the same area of interest during the second year in School culminating in
a professional report.
Required Qualifications:
Fellowship is restricted to those students with a stated intention of entering
the field of city management or municipal finance. Student must be capable
of excellent oral and written communication, have superior interpersonal
skills, and be able to work independently. Selection criteria will also
include the quality of the proposal, the first year academic and extra-curricular
record of the student.
Application Procedure:
Students must contact a City Hall staff and formulate a proposal for a summer
project. Application (the proposal) will be evaluated by an LBJ School special
committee.
Application Requirements:
- Explicit statement of the student's intention to pursue a career in city management or municipal finance;
- A copy of the student's resume;
- A copy of the student's LBJ School grades to date;
- One letter of recommendation from an LBJ School faculty member; and,
- A letter from the municipal government confirming
the willingness of the city professional staff to provide supervision
and suitable support during the summer.
