As we enter the 21st Century, we are witnessing an exciting and increasingly diverse cultural, political and ethnic synergy in public affairs. The dynamic challenges of this evolving public sphere demand a new generation of leaders capable of forging new directions and approaches in public policymaking. To make that possible, the LBJ School of Public Affairs has established the Inman Scholars Summer Leadership Program designed for undergraduate upperclassmen of all academic disciplines—and particularly qualified students of color—who are interested in exploring the field of public policy in a graduate school environment.

The Inman Scholars Program provides an opportunity for participants from varied backgrounds and experiences to come together and interact with academic and professional leaders in the fields of public policy and governance. The program seeks to introduce students to the tenets of leadership through programs and activities that improve their understanding of how public affairs are shaped and defined.

Eligibility

The Inman Scholars program is designed for upperclassmen undergraduate students in the state of Texas who will be rising seniors during the summer of 2008. Currently enrolled students pursuing undergraduate degrees at a Texas college or university who will complete their junior year hours prior to May 27, 2008, are eligible to apply.

Program Benefits

The Inman Scholars Program consists of three primary components: leadership training, academic preparation in quantitative methods and policy analysis, and career mentoring. Participates in the Inman Scholars Program will be invited to Austin, Texas for a six-week residential leadership program (May 27-July 11) focusing on public policy as a tool for change in our society.

Program participants will receive:

Leadership Training

The LBJ School will hold a series of workshops exclusively for participants in the Inman Scholars Program. These workshops will include practical discussions on ethics and leadership issues and guest presentations by prominent practitioners.

Academic Preparation

Program participants will enroll in two undergraduate-level academic courses: Introduction to Quantitative Skills for Public Policy and Global Issues in Public Policy. The courses are designed to introduce students to the world of public policy and to give them the fundamental quantitative skills that graduate programs in public policy expect from qualified applicants.

Graduate School Preparation and Career Planning

Students will participate in a series of workshops designed by career planning professionals, which are geared toward personal exploration and professional development.

Mentors will provide information to students about the broad range of careers that encompass the field of public policy. Discussions about the benefits of graduate school and strategies for approaching the graduate application process will help participants develop a plan for the future and prepare for life after graduation.
