Internship FAQ for Employers

What kinds of internships do LBJ School students seek?
LBJ School students seek paid, policy-related internships in the federal, state, local, nonprofit and private sectors. In order for the student to receive credit for an internship, the internship must be 40 hours per week for 12 weeks. Internships are generally taken during the summer between the first and second years of the program.

What are interns paid?
Pay rates vary, but interns should be viewed as professional staff members and paid accordingly.

What kinds of skills can I expect from an intern?
In order to qualify for an internship, a student must have completed five of six core courses: Applied Quantitative Analysis I and II, Policy Development, Public Financial Management, Public Administration and Management, and Political Economics. As a result of completing these courses, the student brings to the internship advanced analytical, research and writing skills.
