LBJ Professor Peter Ward Delivers Keynote Address at International UNHABITAT Conference
On May 7, LBJ School Professor Peter M. Ward delivered a keynote address at an international United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UNHABITAT) conference in Kuwait.
The event, titled Municipal Management and Urban Development for Sustainability in Arab Cities, was sponsored by the UN and the Kuwaiti government. The conference invited participants to discuss their research on urban governance and planning, affordable housing and urban economies in the context of the challenges posed by the Arab region’s growing urbanization and young labor force.
Professor Ward’s address, based on extensive research in Latin America, explored ways in which policymakers, NGOS and low-income owner households can participate in sustainable home building and housing rehabilitation in developing countries. Ward framed his research within the context of Middle Eastern cities and in an urban governance arena in which local sustainability is a key policy imperative.
