Cynthia Osborne, the Director of the Child and Family Research Partnership and an Associate Professor of Public Affairs at the LBJ School, has been elected to a four-year term on the Policy Council of the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM).

Lincoln Chafee, the 74th Governor of Rhode Island, will speak at the LBJ School of Public Affairs on Feb. 11 at 5:30 PM. Gov. Chafee's talk is titled "Civility for a Great Society" and will focus on lessons learned from the Johnson administration that can help get things done today. This is one of 50 events to be hosted by the LBJ School over the next 18 months to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Johnson administration's landmark legislative initiatives, which include civil rights and voting rights among many others. Twenty years after signing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the United States, Mexico and Canada have experienced a tripling in trade amidst criticism of inequality and accusations of labor exploitation.  To explore the long-term implications, successes and failures of NAFTA, the LBJ School of Public Affairs will host a one-day conference on Feb. 7.

The Distinguished Public Service Award (DPSA) is the highest honor the LBJ School of Public Affairs bestows on its graduates and is reserved for those who go above and beyond in their leadership commitment to public service. This year, the LBJ School is pleased to announce David Berteau (MPAff ’81) as the recipient of the 2013 DPSA.

Students looking to gain a wider audience for their research can submit it to the LBJ Journal, one of the oldest student-run public policy journals in the nation. Starting this year, the LBJ Journal will be published exclusively as an e-journal at http://www.lbjjournal.com/.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs is celebrating the launch of the redesigned Baines Report as the School’s officially sponsored, student-led policy opinion publication.

The new webpage has a streamlined layout and an enhanced focus on social and digital media. The Baines Report now publishes opinion pieces, blogs and podcasts.

On Nov. 19, 2013 , the LBJ School will present “Between Covers: An Annual Celebration of LBJ School Research,” honoring faculty and students who have published and edited books, articles and policy research reports over the past year. The event will take place in the LBJ School first floor lobby from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

The LBJ Presidential Library is holding an essay contest for Texas 12th graders to mark the Civil Rights Act of 1964 signed by President Johnson almost 50 years ago.

The LBJ School of Public Affairs will host a two-day conference on the fate of the Eurozone on Nov. 4 and 5. “Can the Eurozone Be Saved?” will convene European political leaders and policy experts to examine alternative policies to keep the Eurozone intact. This event is free and open to the public but registration is required. This event will take place at the LBJ School of Public Affairs’ Bass Lecture Hall located on The University of Texas at Austin campus.

Amid growing public frustration over congressional gridlock, a LBJ School new report is recommending a number of reforms with the goal of improving congressional procedures and encouraging compromise.

“‘Reclamation of the U.S. Congress goes beyond merely restating contemporary dissatisfactions with Washington to provide a detailed analysis of potential congressional reform proposals — both in terms of historical context and in recognition of contemporary political influences,” said Clinical Professor Angela Evans, who led the project for the LBJ School and, before that, spent 30 years at the Congressional Research Service where she served as deputy director.
