BACKGROUND: One of the most influential writers in Washington today, Bruce Bartlett will discuss his controversial new book, Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy (2006). The talk is free and open to the public.

Bartlett is a noted expert in government economic policy. He served as deputy assistant secretary for economic policy at the U.S. Treasury Department from September 1988 to January 1993. In1987-88, he was a senior policy analyst in the Office of Policy Development at the White House, and from 1985 to 1987, he was a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Between 1976 and 1984, Bartlett held numerous positions on Capitol Hill. He served on the staff of Rep. Ron Paul of Texas as a legislative assistant, and then joined the staff of Rep. Jack Kemp of New York as a special assistant and staff economist, during which time he helped draft the famous Kemp-Roth tax bill. He later served as the legislative director for Sen. Roger Jepsen of Iowa, where he was the legislative director. In 1981, he joined the staff of the Joint Economic Committee of Congress, becoming executive director in 1983.

Bartlett is a prolific author, having published well over 1,000 articles in national newspapers, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post, as well as many magazines, such as Fortune. His twice-weekly column on economic policy is nationally syndicated and runs regularly in the New York Post, The Washington Times, The Detroit News, The Indianapolis Star and other publications. In 1996, one of his columns inspired Bob Dole's 15 percent tax-reduction plan. He has also written for a number of academic journals, such as the National Tax Journal and The World Economy, and published five books, including Reaganomics: Supply-Side Economics in Action, published in 1981.

Bartlett has testified many times before congressional committees and often advises members of Congress, White House staff and other policymakers on tax and economic issues.
