Seminar on North Korean nuclear issues features top officials, leading policy experts

Event: “The Korean Peninsula in 2006: The Six-Party Talks on Nuclear Proliferation and Energy Policy on the Peninsula,” a seminar featuring Ambassador Christopher Hill, head of the U.S. delegation to the ongoing Six-Party Talks on the North Korean nuclear program.

When: 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006.

Where: Bass Lecture Hall, LBJ School of Public Affairs, 2315 Red River St., UT Austin.

Background: Sponsored by the Korea Economic Institute (KEI) and the LBJ School, this event will examine the fundamental issue of what the U.S. can and should do to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons to countries that we think are likely to use them in ways adverse to American interests. The seminar will be divided into two panel discussions. The first, titled “The North Korean Nuclear Issue: Six-Party Talks and Beyond,” will feature Ambassador Hill, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, and LBJ School Dean James Steinberg, who served as Deputy National Security Advisor to President Bill Clinton. Ambassador Jack Pritchard, president of KEI, will moderate the panel. A second panel titled “Energy Generation on the Korea Peninsula” will feature energy experts Amy Jaffe from the Baker Institute at Rice University and David von Hippel from the Nautilus Institute, and will be moderated by LBJ School Professor Eugene Gholz.

The event is free and open to the public. An online video will be posted on the LBJ School Screening Room following the event.
