Student policy conference on
poverty to feature keynote by economist James K. Galbraith

EVENT: “Addressing Poverty: Challenges in a Politicized World,” a policy conference on local, national and international poverty issues, featuring a keynote address by renowned economist James K. Galbraith.

WHEN: 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday, March 31, 2006.

WHERE: LBJ School of Public Affairs, Sid Richardson Hall, Bldg 3, 2315 Red River St., The University of Texas at Austin.

COST: Onsite registration is $50 for non-students and $25 for students and includes a continental breakfast and lunch.

BACKGROUND: Graduate students from around the nation will convene at the LBJ School of Public Affairs to present their research at a conference titled “Addressing Poverty: Challenges in a Politicized World.” The conference will be divided into four panels titled “The Federal Safety Net in the U.S.,” “Economic Perspectives on International Poverty Issues,” “Social Policies and Global Poverty,” and “Urban and Regional Poverty Issues.”

Economist James K. Galbraith, the Lloyd M. Bentsen Jr. Chair in Government/Business Relations at the LBJ School, will deliver a keynote luncheon address titled "Global Inequality: Can the evidence lead us to a smoking gun?" Galbraith, who directs the University of Texas Inequality Project, is an expert on issues pertaining to employment and inequality, especially determinants of global inequality. His books include Inequality and Industrial Change: A Global View (with M. Berner), 2001; Created Unequal: The Crisis in American Pay 1998; Macroeconomics (with W. Darity Jr.) 1992; and Balancing Acts: Technology, Finance and the American Future, 1989. A senior scholar at the Levy Economics Institute, Galbraith also serves as chair of the Board of Economists for Peace and Security. He writes a column called "Econoclast" for Mother Jones and occasional commentary in many other publications, including The Texas Observer, The American Prospect, and The Nation. He is an occasional commentator for Public Radio International's Marketplace.
