New Book Explores Mexican-Origin Health Security

Dr. Jacqueline Angel publishes unique volume on the aging Hispanic population

Dr. Jacqueline L. Angel, professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs and the Department of Sociology, along with Dr. Keith E. Whitfield of Duke University, is an editor of a new book titled The Health of Aging Hispanics: The Mexican-Origin Population.

In this unique volume, contributions provide initial information on numerous factors that affect the health security of Mexican-origin families and individuals as they face the burdens of decline in health status and caring for children and the elderly simultaneously, including health issues before and after immigration. Also included is material addressing important issues related to the contemporary political debate on immigration and healthcare reform in the United States and Mexico. In the coming decades, collections such as this will be critical to develop a better understanding of how immigration from Latin America, Asia and Africa to the United States produces health disparities in our aging population.

Contributors to the volume include Angel; Dr. Eileen M. Crimmins, director of the USC/UCLA Center on Biodemography and Population Health; Dr. Peter M. Ward, C.B. Smith Sr. Centennial Chair in U.S.-Mexico Relations and Professor of Public Affairs and Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin; and Dr. David C. Warner, Professor and Wilbur J. Cohen Fellow in Health and Social Policy at the University of Texas at Austin.

The book was published in March by Springer and is available at bookstores.
