LBJ School Joins Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) As New Masters Program in Global Policy Studies (MGPS) Set To Launch

AUSTIN, Texas-- Aug. 20, 2008-- The Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs (APSIA) has inaugurated its newest member – The University of Texas at Austin’s own Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs – in anticipation of the school’s new global policy program.

Comprising 34 member graduate schools in North America (including the LBJ School), Asia and Europe, APSIA aims to improve professional education in international affairs and the advancement of international understanding, prosperity, peace, and security. All APSIA schools offer two-year masters degree programs designed to impart a thorough knowledge of international relations, public policy and the world’s countries and cultures.

“This is a terrific opportunity for the LBJ School, especially as we inaugurate our Master of Global Policy Studies degree and welcome its first entering class this fall,” said LBJ School Dean James B. Steinberg.

The LBJ School rolls out its Master of Global Policy Studies (MGPS) program this school year, signifying the school’s addition of a policy curriculum with international focus. Thirty-five new students join eleven transfer students from the Master of Public Affairs (MPAff) to comprise the inaugural MGPS class.

APSIA organizes admissions fairs around the world through which member schools recruit prospective students to their international programs. The LBJ School will attend its first APSIA fair in Washington, D.C. on October 14, drawing attention to its large alumni presence in the nation’s capital.

APSIA member schools are the primary sources of education for international affairs professionals in their respective countries. Membership demands that schools take a multi-disciplinary approach to professional education, apply theoretical instruction to practical issues in international relations, and offer joint and dual degree programs that combine the study of international affairs with such fields as law, business, public policy, environmental studies, social work or public health. Faculty members at APSIA schools include noted scholars and practitioners who enhance the international effectiveness of institutions in the public, private and nonprofit sectors.

ASPIA schools prepare students for the global workplace of the 21st Century by combining multidisciplinary, policy-oriented, intercultural studies with career development. Their students are trained to become diverse, informed, and sophisticated international affairs professionals, many of whom hold leadership positions in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors throughout the United States and the world.
