The LBJ School Alumni Speaker Series Presents: Financial Opportunity – building economic opportunity in lower income communities
AUSTIN, Texas-- Oct. 10, 2008-- Alumna Margo Weisz (‘94) will be the featured speaker for the next installment in the Alumni Speaker Series, which will be on October 14th at 12:15p.m. in the student lounge. She will give a talk entitled "Financial Opportunity--building economic opportunity in lower income communities."
Margo has served as the Executive Director of PeopleFund, a community development financial institution, since its inception in 1995 and has received wide recognition for her work. In 2006 she was chosen as a Profiles in Power winner from the Austin Business Journal, in 2004 she received the Ernst & Young Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award, and in 2003 she was chosen as Austinite of the Year at the Austin Under 40 Awards. She was also chosen as a 2003 Marshall Fellow and in that role traveled to Europe to discuss transatlantic relations.
Margo has a long history of community leadership. She serves as the Founder and President of the Board of PeopleTrust, Texas’ first community land trust. She currently serves on the Board of the Alliance for Public Transportation, and as the Austin Coordinator for the German Marshall Fund’s Transatlantic Cities Program. She has served as the Chairwoman for the Mayor’s Small Business Task Force. She has served on the Executive Board of the Texas Association of Community Development Corporations.
Margo is a frequent speaker at conferences including Opportunity Finance Network, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, Texas Association of CDCs and the University of Texas. Additionally, Margo has served as a Lecturer at the University of Texas McCombs School of Business where she taught a class on Community Development and Social Enterprise.
