The Washington DC Alumni Chapter of the LBJ School of Public Affairs will continue its Summer Speaker Series on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 as it hosts LBJ Alumnus Austin Smythe. The 1980 graduate is the staff director of the Republican Office of the Committee on the Budget and is the former Executive Associate Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Mr. Smythe spent 15 years (1984 to 1999) on the Republican staff of the Senate Budget Committee. Smythe was also an advisor to the Bush presidential campaign in 2000.
Smythe will offer an interesting perspective on the budget process, the nuances of working on majority and minority congressional committee staff, and campaigning. The Washington DC Summer Speaker Series is a great way to network and join in an interesting discussion with Texans of note working in Washington, DC.
The 2008 Washington DC Summer Speakers Series features seven weeks of guest speakers who will enlighten students and alumni of the LBJ School of Public Affairs, as well as LBJ Alumni, LBJ students, UT students, and UT alumni on issues of domestic and international policy.

On May 20th, the Alumni Association welcomed Kenneth S. Apfel (LBJ Class of 1978) to kick off the series. Apfel is the Professor of the Practice at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. Before joining the university He served as the Sid Richardson Chair in Public Affairs here at the LBJ School. His teaching and research interests are in public management and leadership, as well as in social policy with a particular focus on aging, health care, and retirement issues.
He is a former commissioner of the Social Security Administration and former associate director for human resources for the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
