About the Governor's Center
The Governor's Center for Management Development was founded in 1981 under
the auspices of then Texas Governor, William P. Clements. The Center was begun
in an effort to provide economical managerial and leadership training to managers
in Texas state agencies. The instructors, all trained managers, were provided on
a temporary basis for the program by the state agencies. In October 1993, by
executive order the Center was transferred to the Lyndon B. Johnson School of
Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. The initial management and leadership training
has evolved over time into the three current course tracks for managers,
Management Development Program,
Excellence in Leadership, and
the Senior Management Program.
The Center's courses are currently conducted by loaned
instructors from Texas state agencies, faculty from the University of
Texas at Austin, and outside consultants. The belief persists that through
continuing leadership training, managers of Texas state agencies may continually
become more skilled and effective in promoting change and cooperation
and set the example for leadership and management skills throughout Texas.
