Assessing Future Rice Irrigation Demands in the Lower Colorado River Authority Service Area

This report evaluates the potential of rice production, and in turn the rice industry's irrigation demands, in the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) service area during the next 50 years. Although rice yields have remained consistent in recent years, farmers continue to rely on second annual crops each season to maintain profitability. As these crops require heavy irrigation during the summer months, an affordable and plentiful supply of water during peak months is crucial to the continued viability of rice farming in the LCRA service area. The report projects future agricultural demand for rice irrigation water in the area will remain relatively consistent with current demand, and recommends a continued commitment by the LCRA to provide adequate water at consistent and affordable price.
