State E-Government Strategies: Identifying Best Practices and Applications

Project directed by Sherri Greenberg

Electronic government, or e-government, is the use of information technology (IT) to integrate government and its services for citizen, business, government, and other institutional uses. E-government continues to be influential in the study of governance. Federal and state e-government programs have evolved considerably since their inception in the early 1990s. These changes parallel the ever-changing technological environment and shifts in attitudes regarding the relationships between government, citizens, and businesses. This report seeks to identify some of the best practices in e-government strategies and management. Understanding these aspects of e-government planning and implementation is integral to future governance because they can offer more efficient methods for service provision, citizen communication, and business community support. In addition, studying unique strategies and management within state programs can enhance future federal e-government initiatives.
