Wilson, Valliere get teaching awards

In recognition of their superior teaching skills and commitment to education, Professor Robert Wilson and second-year student Daniel Valliere were selected by LBJ School students to receive this year's Texas Excellence Teaching Awards. Administered by the UT Ex-Students' Association, the awards are part of a university-wide program that promotes excellence in teaching by recognizing outstanding faculty members, teaching assistants, and advisers.

Wilson, who holds the Mike Hogg Professorship in Urban Policy, has been on the LBJ School faculty since 1979. Praised for his accessibility and effective teaching style, he is the first LBJ School faculty member to win the TETA award twice (the first was in 1986). During a reception in December, Wilson told those in attendance that "it is good students who make good teachers, and the LBJ School's students are consistently good."

Valliere, a teaching assistant in public financial management, seconded Wilson's comment and added that teaching good students is also "a lot of fun--it brings full circle my interest in working with people."
