Cultural Infrastructure Project

In collaboration with the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, Director Peter Frumkin is embarking on a study of the recent building boom in the cultural sector. The project is funded by the Mellon, MacArthur, and Kresge foundations and seeks to examine how key decisions are made during the planning and execution of new constructions of museums, theaters, and performing arts centers as well as what factors influence the projects' degree of success. Frumkin and his team will produce management case studies suitable for executive education and graduate courses in arts management.

For information on this project, contact Anastasia Kolendo at: akolendo@mail.utexas.edu.

$100,000 Barker Foundation grant awarded to Dr. Sarah Jane Rehnborg
January 6, 2009

Dr. Sarah Jane Rehnborg has received a two-year, $100,000 grant from the Barker Foundation for the purpose of developing case studies that focus on the role and impact of volunteers within the nonprofit sector.

Volunteers, considered by many to be the sector's most under-utilized competitive advantage, are rarely the subject of academic study in nonprofit programs. This grant will facilitate the integration of volunteer-specific information in graduate-level curriculum through the development of case studies and accompanying teaching notes. The resources provided by this grant will continue the work started in 2007-2008 by the Volunteer Impact Fund and the RGK Center's Volunteer Champions' Initiative.

Dr. Francie Ostrower receives Aspen Institute Grant
December 17, 2008

Francie Ostrower has received a grant from the Aspen Institute for "Limited Life Foundations: A Study." Most private foundations are established in perpetuity, but some foundations and donors choose a different path, deciding to distribute their assets within a set period and close the foundation. Some passionately advocate this strategy and there are those who urge more donors and foundations to at least seriously consider this alternative. One of the major gaps in the foundation literature, however, is the absence of research on foundations that do choose limited life - why they do it, how they do it, and the consequences of their decision.

Through in-depth case studies of limited-life foundations, this research will help to fill this gap, and thereby broaden our understanding of philanthropic strategies as well as provide information that can assist those considering or implementing a sunset plan. The study builds on Professor Ostrower's earlier research comparing limited life and perpetual foundations which will be published by the Urban Institute next year.

RGK Center honored by the City of Austin
October 15, 2008

The City of Austin is recognizing the RGK Center as one of the city's "Partners in the Arts & Humanities" for our contribution to Austin Parks and Recreation Department's Totally Cool Totally Art program as part of last year's Philanthropy and the Arts course supported by the M.R. & Evelyn Hudson Foundation.

Our donation enabled the TCTA program to purchase 2 Apple iBooks for use in classes. Students are now able to use portable technology to record music, edit short films and alter digital photographs. A brief awards ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 23, 2008 during the Austin City Council meeting.
