Nonprofit Governance: Management Prospective & Comp Analysis

Students desiring additional exposure to public management issues may select from seminars on such topics as managing diversity, principles and practices of effective leadership, and social entrepreneurship.
Through an analysis of case studies, an exploration of required readings and service work with community-based nonprofit organizations, students will investigate the governance and leadership functions of the nonprofit boards of directors. Attention will be given to the legal responsibilities of trustees, the function of bylaws, issues in board composition and development, organizational oversight, agenda development, and current research on best practices in board management. Guest speakers will round out the presentations sharing their experiences leading boards, facilitating commissions (public and nonprofit), and serving on boards. A rich assortment of case studies will be used to bring critical governance issues to life and to pose to the student the type of challenges inherent in board participation. In addition, we will engage in a comparative analysis of organizational structures visa vie the issue of organizational ëownership.í Students will examine the significance of the nonprofit nondistribution of earnings constraint and the implications of firms held in ìtrustî but lacking owners. Through a reflection on service placements, students will explore the wide variation of governance styles across the nonprofit sector.
