Fall 2009 Course Description
Policy research project
Description: Civic leaders and arts funders in Austin are seeking to better understand what arts education opportunities are available to students in the region, in order to design and implement an action plan that will increase access to arts education for all young people. To plan for the future, an LBJ School PRP has been commissioned to:
- Collect an array of data from area artists, arts organizations, arts educators, grantmakers, city personnel, school personnel, and community members related to existing arts education activities in Austin.
- Use this data to describe the current landscape of arts education in Austin
- Review exemplary arts education programs to identify best practices and characteristics to consider in strengthening Austin’s programs
- Facilitate a community meeting in the spring that will result in an action plan to expand arts education for Austin.
Students will acquire skills in survey research, structured interviewing, GIS mapping, focus group management, facilitating community discussions of a lively issue in arts and education, and working with multiple stakeholders in designing a community-responsive program.
This course counts as a core course for the Portfolio in Nonprofit Studies.
