Description: This course is designed for students interested in the multiple challenges of managing and leading nonprofit organizations to achieve social impact. We will concentrate on management demands that are distinctive to nonprofit organizations, including mission, program, budget and finance, evaluation, marketing, fundraising, operational issues, board governance, personnel, strategic alliances, managing change and building capacity for growth and effectiveness. Class meetings will be usually be organized around a case and a set of readings. Periodically we will host invited guests from the nonprofit sector. Students are expected to participate in class discussions, complete independent written assignments, select one nonprofit to study during the course, and actively contribute to assigned group projects. Students who complete the course will acquire a deeper understanding of the scope and issues of the nonprofit sector and a set of strategy tools and frameworks that will help them succeed in nonprofit endeavors. This course is applicable for students from various departments with interest in civil society, nonprofit management and community governance.
