LBJ School of Public Affairs - Camp LBJ

Camp LBJ Social Activities

Entering Students' Home > Camp Home Page > Social Events

One advantage of starting the LBJ experience in mid-July is that you get a head start getting to know the people at School and the cool places in town.  Here is what the Orientation Committee has put together during Camp.

Happy Hour at Posse East
North of Campus, 29nd and Duval Street
Friday, July 16
5:00 pm
Celebrate the end of the first week of camp and the beginning of your LBJ experience within walking distance of the LBJ School. Posse is a neighborhood bar and has been a perennial favorite for LBJ students with its good grub, cold beer, and plenty of places to sit and shoot the breeze with friends, both inside and out. Significant others welcome

Pot-luck dinner at Pat Wong's
Village of Bee Cave
Saturday, July 17
6:00 pm
A Hill Country welcome! All entering students and significant others are invited to this get-together at the beginning of Camp. Drinks, munchies, and utensils will be provided. Please bring a real dish if you could, but new arrivals in Austin are exempt-we will take care of it if you inform Pat by e-mail. Significant others are invited!  Casual attire.

Directions are available in your packet or Camp electronic reserves.

Q & A with 2nd Year Students
LBJ Student Lounge
Friday, July 23
1:00 - 2:00 pm
The second year students who are interning this summer would like to welcome you to LBJ and help ease your transition. Bring your lunch and meet us in the Student Lounge for a casual hour of questions and answers. Nothing formal, you decide the format. There will be international students, joint degree students, old students, young students etc.—all there to answer whatever questions you might have.

Lavaca Street Bar & Mr. Sinus Theater
4th and Lavaca
Friday, July 23
Meet at 5:00 pm, show starts at 7:00 pm
Meet us downtown at Lavaca Street Bar and Grill before we head over to the Alamo Drafthouse to catch some Mr. Sinus Theater. If you've never been to the Drafthouse, you haven't really experienced Austin in its glory.  We don't know what movie the guys from Mr. Sinus will be showing, but you can bet it will be horrible...and very funny.

LBJ Recess—Capture The Flag
Zilker Park

Saturday July 24
2:00 - 3:00 pm
Continue the tradition! Each week a dedicated group of LBJ students get together for recess to play capture the flag. Yes, the same game you played in kindergarten. We even have our own web site! Tons of fun and good exercise as well. After sweating it out we will all head down to Baron Springs to cool off.  Meet up at school for carpooling.

Outing at Barton Springs
Zilker Park
Saturday, July 24
3:00 pm
What better way to cool off after a great game of CTF then in the famous springs. Spend the hottest part of the day lounging in the water and bragging about winning “capture.” We will leave school around 3:00 or you can meet us there. Bring your sunscreen, bathing suit, and lots of water. (No coolers allowed in the pool area but there is a snack bar.) Significant others are welcome. Entry fee is around $2.95 per person.

Happy Hour at the Threadgill's South
Riverside & Barton Springs Rd
Friday, July 30
5:00 pm
If you have ever read about the history of Austin's music scene, you probably know the Armadillo World Headquarters.  Well the Armadillo has since morphed into Threadgill's but still preserves the dream of letting cowboys and hippies get along by combining great food, beer, and music.  Stick around and a band will probably play on the outdoor stage.

Golf at Lion's Gold Club or
Disc Golf at Bartholomew Park
2901 Enfield or 51st and Berkman
Saturday, July 31
TBD
For those that enjoy one of the greatest games ever invented. Lion’s is a fun course, not too challenging but fairly easy to get a group of tee times. We’ll shoot for a morning round and hope to hit the 19th Green by 1:00. But if disc golf is more your speed, we'll play a round at Bartholomew Park after meeting up at school to carpool.

Lunch with Second Years
Various Locations (TBA)
Friday, Aug 6
1:00 pm
Second year students will show you their favorite places to eat in Austin and answer any questions you may have about LBJ, Austin, classes professors etc. Another great opportunity to meet your classmates and get the real scoop on what’s going on.

Happy Hour at the Cedar Door
2nd & Brazos Street
Friday, Aug 6
5:00 pm
Rally at the Cedar Door before checking out Downtown Austin.  The Cedar Door is a great place to sit outside and enjoy the sunset with a few Margaritas.  Get there early for street parking.  If not, there is a pay lot right across the street.  Significant others welcome.

Post-Validation Happy Hour - Club DeVille
900 Red River
Monday, Aug 9
5:30 pm
Take a deep breath! You survived the quantitative review and the validation exams. Now it wasn't’t that bad, was it? A well deserved happy hour will be held in your honor so campers can relax and enjoy the last week of camp. Second years will be there for post-game analysis and support. Club DeVille is a quiet pub owned by an LBJ alum. No reason to stay home for this one—no studying till class starts.

Round Rock Express Baseball Game
Dell Diamond in Round Rock

Thursday, August 12
Carpool 5:30
Game time 7:00pm
Experience minor league baseball at its finest at beautiful Dell Diamond in Round Rock. A fantastic field to enjoy a great game. Group tickets are only $2.50 each. We will carpool from school around 5:30, drive is about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic, the game starts at 7:00. Significant others always welcome

Pre-Orientation Banquet at the Salt Lick
18300 FM 1826 in Driftwood
Sunday, Aug 15
Leave School at 5:30 pm
Ok, so it’s not really a banquet, but it is some of the best BBQ in Central Texas. All you can eat but BYOB (Hay County is dry) Best way to transition from Camp to Orientation and meet newly arriving non-Campers.  Really a great time and you have to check out the table center pieces too.
