A. Course Objective

The two-day algebra review sessions before Camp are an intensive learning experience for students who need assistance with basic concepts and mechanics. Students who have difficulty with the algebra diagnostic exercise, included in the Camp LBJ packet (and electronic reserves), should consider attending these sessions.

The review will be repeated Wednesday afternoons from the second to the fourth week of Camp. These sessions are intended for students who wish to obtain more solid foundation—in terms of graphing and working with equations—in preparation for the calculus validation exam.

B. Course Organization

On July 12 and July 13, we will meet in both the morning and the afternoon. The intention here is to provide a comprehensive treatment of selected topics in algebra so as to make you as comfortable as possible in an environment which increasingly makes use of quantitative analysis. We will meet on Wednesdays between 2-5 PM to review key algebra principles and graphing. The underlying approach will be to first develop the mathematical concept and then reinforce them with applications

C. Reading Material

There is no required textbook for this course. However, we have found from past experience that many students find the exercises helpful in the following two books:
Barbara Bleau: Forgotten Algebra: A Self-Teaching Reference Course. Hauppauge, NY: Barrons, 1994.

Frank Budnick: Applied Mathematics for Business, Economics, and the Social Sciences. (4th Ed.) New York: McGraw Hill, 1994.

Bleau is an easy self-study guide that serves as a good starter. Students should however proceed to the conceptual level of Budnick by the time the Pre-Camp begins.

For the Pre-Camp, please review the following chapters in Budnick. The rest of Budnick will be covered in the Quantitative Review course as part of Camp.

Appendix (Review of Algebra)
Chapter 1 (Preliminaries)
Chapter 2 (Linear Equations)
Chapter 3 (Systems of Linear Equations)
Chapter 4 (Mathematical Functions)
Chapter 5 (Applications: Linear Functions)
Chapter 6 (Quadratic and Polynomial Functions)
Chapter 7 (Exponential and Logarithmic Functions)
These Budnick chapters are available on electronic reserves. Older editions of Budnick would work just as well, although the chapter numbering may be slightly different.

D. Scheduled Topics

Session 1 July 12(AM)   Behavior of numbers,
Simple algebraic expressions,
Fractions and basic rules of algebra.

Session 2

July 12 (PM)   Basic concepts in distribution,
Types of functions,
Graphing and manipulating functions.

Session 3 July 13 (AM)   Geometric principles,
Logarithms and exponents,
Quadratic equations and factoring

Session 4 July 13 (PM)   Solving higher order equations,
Solving systems of equations,
Series and summation notation.

The three sessions on July 21, July 28, and August 4 will be a review of the concepts covered on the first two days to assist the students in the recall of key rules/concepts.
