Fall 2009 Course Description
Policy research project
This course fulfills requirements for the following specialization(s):
- Urban and State Affairs
- Technology, Innovation, and Information Policy
Description: President Obama's very first executive action, on Inauguration Day, was to affirm his administration's commitment to freedom of information and government transparency. The White House has created a new Chief Information Officer position, and has hired some technology innovators to move the federal government toward a new era in transparency using Internet tools. Similar efforts are underway in the states and at the local level of government. At the same time, there is a new generation of civic activists outside government who are pressing for more transparency and who are developing interesting new online tools to make that happen. This PRP will look at these trends and work with the Texas Freedom of Information Foundation on a plan to help increase transparency in Texas, but also with attention to models emerging within the federal government and other states. This PRP will be conducted jointly with the PRP supervised by Professor Sherri Greenberg.
Web development experience will be helpful but is not required for this PRP.
