This course will introduce students to the major challenges of management in the public and nonprofit sectors. Classic and contemporary readings in public administration will expose students to the major intellectual themes of public administration and public management, while case studies and projects address the practical challenges of leadership in public and non-profit organizations. The course will focus on four key issues drawing from public administration, public management, and organization theory: bureaucratic discretion, accountability and performance measurement, democracy and social equity, and administrative ethics. Classroom activities and assignments are designed to develop practical skills such as leading groups, researching policies, making presentations, and writing memos and briefs. Students will have frequent opportunities to give and receive feedback to enhance the development of these skills.
