Description: Modern military forces are powerful instruments of statecraft. The purpose of this course is to acquaint students with the missions, capabilities, and costs of the forces that make up the U.S. military establishment, bringing their knowledge up to the level that civilian decision-makers ought to understand. The course explains the detailed capabilities and limitations of ground, air, and sea power in high-intensity conventional warfare and in peacekeeping and other low-intensity operations. It also discusses crisis planning procedures, military doctrine development, and the effect of new technologies on the way the military organizes and fights. Students will gain familiarity with the key military policy issues that confront government officials, and they will learn to evaluate the claims of journalists and advocacy organizations that confront informed American opinion on a day-to-day basis.
