Description: This PRP will be a continuation of a series of PRPs done over the past decade that have explored the dimensions of the "digital divide" and public access to information technologies and the Internet. This PRP will continue to focus on developments in the domains of Open Source software, wireless networks and low-cost computing of benefit to low-budget organizations. This package of new, low-cost technologies is emerging as an alternative to expensive "enterprise" computing, and it is particularly relevant to, and of interest to, community-based nonprofit organizations, resource-strained schools, small governmental units and developing nations. The PRP will inherit the work of previous PRPs, including a Web site, a conference and relationships with local nonprofit groups, and the purpose of the PRP will be to extend and enrich these experiences and relationships, as well as develop new lines of inquiry and research.
