Description: Economic analysis and its application to transportation are the central themes of this course. The purpose of the course is to provide students with an understanding of the manner in which the basic principles of demand, costs, pricing, efficiency, investment, externalities, and the like, can be applied to the analysis of a variety of transportation public policy issues such as congestion, subsidies, lack of competition, quality of service, pollution, and international trade, and various forms of government intervention.

The course will begin with an overview of the current transportation system, descriptive statistics, and current issues of interest to economists. All modes of freight and passenger transportation will be considered: trucking, mass transit, airlines, maritime, and railroads. Case studies of current issues will be drawn from local (urban and rural), state, national, and international arenas. Class presentations will consist of both theoretical discussions and their applications to addressing prevailing transportation problems.
