Description: The problem of providing education is an important policy issue in developing and developed countries around the world. Economics of Education will examine public education systems from the perspective of efficiency and equity of public investments. Topics include educational investments and financing, private and social benefits of schooling, and demand- and supply-side market reform strategies. Students will learn to apply generic education reforms (such as subsidies, vouchers, teacher-incentive pay, and private schools) to local contexts. These skills will be developed in interactive projects including developing a tax scheme for public education and designing an equitable school voucher system. Assignments include problem sets, group projects, and a final paper. This course is appropriate for MPAff or GPS students. GPS students are required to write the final paper on an international topic. (Prerequisite: AMPA)
