Creating a new page is simple. Choose New from the File menu.

Whenever creating a page, you should always give it a title. You enter this information into the Title: field that appears below your menu bar or choose Page Properties from the Modify menu.

Editing Your New Page

To create text on your new page, you simply click on the page and start typing. Images may be added to your page by choosing Image from the Insert menu. Most of the items you add to your page will be controlled using the Properties (if the Properties Window is not visible you can open it from the Window menu).

Properties Window

This is where you will control things like:

  • CSS style, including Font attributes
  • Bolding
  • Italics
  • Vertical and horizontal alignment
  • Background color
  • Numbering or bulleting
  • Links
  • Alternate text for image

Creating a Link

To create a link, highlight/select the text, image, etc. you would like to make an active link. Specify where the link should point in the Link field in the Properties Window. You can choose to either make your links relative (ex., index.html) or absolute (ex., http://www.utexas.edu/learn/dreamweaver/index.html).

Controlling Text Formatting

Most of the text formatting available in the Properties Window is fairly self-explanatory.

Font Type: You can change the type of font using the pulldown menu that reads Default Font to specify a specific font such as arial.

SIDE NOTE: Make the shift to controlling your presentation of your webpages with CSS. Learn more about CSS.

Font Size: Next to this is another pulldown menu to control the size your font appears. We suggest using the relative sizes (i.e., +1, +2, -1, -2) to control font size as they tend to be more friendly for web users with disabilities. (More information on making your web pages accessible.)

Font Color: Font color is controlled by the box next to the Size menu. You will be given a palette of colors to choose from. You may also move the cursor off the Properties Window to use the color sampler eye dropper to pick up a color from somewhere else on your monitor.

Bold & Italics: B and I buttons are available to make text bold or italicized automatically.

Bullets & Numbering: To make text bulleted or numbered, use the buttons provided in the Properties Window. Note that a full break must occur between each bulleted or numbered item.

Headings: To make text a heading size, use the pulldown menu located next to Format. The default is usually Paragraph or None.

Line Breaks: To create a full line break (white space between line 1 and line 2) simply use your Enter key. If you would like to drop down to the next line, but not insert any white space between, use a combination of Shift+Enter.

Inserting Images and Other Objects

Images: To insert an image, use the Image option on the Insert menu. You should also make sure that any images you include on your site have alternate text provided for individuals with the images turned off in their browser. To do this, select the image and type a description in the Alt field of the Properties Window.

Other Objects: You can also insert other things like horizontal rules, special characters, nonbreaking spaces, e-mail links, dates, named anchors (for jump links), Flash video, etc. using the Insert menu. Play around with the menu to see the various things you can automatically insert into your pages.

Saving Your New Page

To save your new page, choose Save from the File menu. Be sure that you are saving your file in the folder you created for your site! Once you have saved a page in your site, you will be able to view and open it from the Site Window.
