The University of Texas at Austin- What Starts Here Changes the World
Services Navigation

Before you can put your files on a server, you will need to get an account on one of UT's available servers. See the Server Options Page for more information on how to do this.

Once you have completed your site (or finished modifying a specific page that needs updating) and want to put it on the web you need to upload the file(s) to your server. You can do this one of two ways:

  1. Using a separate FTP software like SSH Secure File Transfer (Windows) or Fugu for Macintosh; or
  2. From within Dreamweaver using the Remote Site feature.
Using a Separate FTP Software

If you prefer to use a separate application to upload and download files to and from the server, view Learning to Publish - Uploading Web Pages.

Within Dreamweaver Using the Remote Site Feature

If you prefer to do all your web creation, maintenance and uploading/downloading within Dreamweaver, you can configure and use the Remote Site Feature. To do this you will need to know:

  1. The Server Name
  2. Your Username for the Server
  3. Your Password for the Server
  4. The location where your files live on the Server

You set this up in the same location where you create Sites (Defining Your Site). In the Site Manage Sites choose Remote Info from the options to the left.

Setting Up Remote Info Dialog

Access = FTP
FTP Host = The server Name
Host Directory = The location where your files live on the Server
Login = Your Username for the Server
Password = Your password for the Server

NOTE: Dreamweaver CS3 uses SecureFTP and does not require you to set up a tunnel. Make sure you click the "Use Secure FTP check box" in the Remote FTP info section of the Manage sites dialog box. Previous versions do not use secure FTP so you need to configure it to use an SSH tunnel like WS_FTP or Fetch.

Some servers will need Use Passive FTP to be chosen for you to have access. If you don't seem successful you might want to try that option. If your server has a firewall set up, talk to the administrator of the server or the appropriate help desk. You will need to put firewall information into your Dreamweaver preferences.

Once you have done this, you will be able to connect to your server from within your Site Window and view the files on your local machine and the files on the server at the same time.

To connect to the server so that you can view the files on the Server and your local machine you will use the plug icon graphic of the plug icon at the top of your Site Window. The arrows are used to upload and download:

graphic of the up arrow up arrow to upload files to the server

graphic of the down arrow down arrow to download files from the server.

It's as simple as that.
