Student Organization Publishing

All student organizations must abide by IT policies and specific policies regarding disk usage and bandwidth when they serve their site from http://studentorgs.utexas.edu/.

Follow these steps to publish from Web Central:

  1. Get a computer account

You need a computer account with the Unix Timesharing System (UTS) Service. An authorized representative of the student organization must get this account.

To open an account or get an existing user account validated for UTS, go to the Student Activities and Leadership Development (SALD) office in SSB 4.400. Bring your student ID and an organization check for at least $15 made out to UT Austin to cover costs. Your user account should be available on UTS within 48 hours. You should then follow the remaining directions on this web page. You may wish to take some of the short courses offered by ITS covering UNIX skills and web publishing.

  2. Log in to UTS at least once using an SSH/Telnet client program

All publishers must login to UTS (host name=uts.cc.utexas.edu) at least once to change their login name. Names must be 8 or fewer characters. Change your login name to one that reflects the name of the organization. Do not change it to your name. For example, cycling is a good login name, cindy is not. The name you pick is important, because you will sign all Web pages:

    login-name@www.utexas.edu

When you transfer maintenance of the organization's pages to another member of the organization, remember to transfer the user name, password, and other information necessary for the new person to assume responsibility for the pages.

  3. Request a publishing directory

Student organizations have a special area on Web Central for Web publishing, studentorgs.utexas.edu.

To request a publishing directory on Web Central, complete this form (requires UT EID). You will receive confirmation, along with instructions on how to access the directory, within two work days. You will own and manage this directory.

  4. Read the publishing guidelines

Please read all publishing guidelines. While these are guidelines and not requirements, we recommend that you be familiar with them.

  5. Learn basic HTML

  6. Learn basic UNIX

You should know how to create, delete, and move files and directories. If you use Fetch, you can perform many of these tasks with it.

  7. Learn to manage files and directories

You will be publishing from Web Central, a UNIX machine. Learn the tips and techniques for managing your files and directories.

  8. Put your files in your publishing directory

Put all the files that you want to publish in your new publishing directory or in subdirectories that you create. See instructions for uploading.

After you have completed and tested your pages, request to be added to the Student Organizations page.
