Eickmann will lead construction industry’s research collaborative

Lt. Gen. Kenneth Eickmann, whose leadership accomplishments include having led the federal rescue and recovery efforts following the 1995 bombing of Oklahoma City's Alfred P. Murrah Building, has been chosen to be director of the Construction Industry Institute at The University of Texas at Austin effective June 1.
UT College of Education Learning Technology Center provides leadership in connecting Native American schools to Internet

The Learning Technology Center in the College of Education at The University of Texas at Austin has played a major leadership role in efforts to connect the 185 Bureau of Indian Affairs schools to the Internet. This effort will be furthered and celebrated during Access Native American Net Day on May 16, when 28 schools of the Navajo Reservation in Arizona, the Pueblos of New Mexico, the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Reservation in Mississippi will be wired.
New members of Academy of Distinguished Teachers named

Eleven new faculty members have been elected to the Academy of Distinguished Teachers at The University of Texas at Austin. The academy, which now totals 41 members, is intended to recognize and enhance teaching, particularly at the undergraduate level.
Patricia Ohlendorf appointed vice president

Patricia C. Ohlendorf, a vice provost who has served as adviser to The University of Texas at Austin president on legal and policy matters, has been named vice president for administration and legal affairs. Her appointment was announced Friday (May 1) by President Larry R. Faulkner and is effective June 1.

A presidential advisory committee on Thursday outlined major revisions to modify and enhance The University of Texas at Austin's current compensation and classification plan for staff. The committee recommended increases in minimum salary rates, pay raises for staff members making below the market rate for similar jobs in Austin and other relevant labor markets, and special equity adjustments based on job performance.
AISD officials to honor ‘powerful role model’ during groundbreaking ceremony for Amÿrico Paredes Middle School on April 27

On Monday (April 27), the contributions of Amÿrico Paredes, professor emeritus at The University of Texas at Austin, will be celebrated by officials of the Austin Independent School District.
San Antonio’s Camille Buffalo named repeat winner of UT Austin’s Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition

Camille A. Buffalo, a senior in Virginia Gallegos' class at William H. Taft High School in San Antonio, won first place for the second consecutive year at the Third Annual Barbara Jordan Historical Essay Competition for her essay titled, "The Buffalo Soldiers: Trailblazers of Texas and the Western Frontier." Buffalo received $2,500 and a gold commemorative trophy at an awards ceremony Friday (April 17) at The University of Texas at Austin.
Maya historian Linda Schele dies

University of Texas at Austin scholar Linda Schele, a major figure in the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing and the study of ancient American civilization, died on April 18th in Austin at the age of 55 from pancreatic cancer. In a 25-year period, Schele produced a large number of important works on ancient Maya art, culture and writing.
James Hill appointed UT Austin vice president

Dr. James Hill, who has dedicated his career to personnelmatters and efforts in university community affairs, has been appointedvice president for human resources and community relations at The Universityof Texas at Austin. The appointment, which is effective June 1, wasannounced Friday (April 17) by President Larry R. Faulkner.
