    Two groups from The University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture are the first-and third-place student winners of the 1998 Charles E. Peterson Prize awarded recently by the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS).
  • Nov. 17UT officials to visit Laredo high school students, encouraging seniors to apply for admission
    Two teams of key administrators, led by President Larry R. Faulkner of The University of Texas at Austin and UT System Chancellor William H. Cunningham, will visit seven high schools in Laredo on Thursday (Nov. 19), encouraging students to set their goals high and strive for a college education.
  • Nov. 17Amÿrico Paredes honored at State Capitol
    UT Austin's Professor Emeritus of Anthropology and Folklore, Americo Paredes, received the lifetime achievement award Nov. 14 at the Capitol during the opening session for the Texas Book Festival. Laura Bush, first lady of Texas and honorary chair of the festival, presented the award, accompanied by singer/songwriter Tish Hinojosa and UT Austin Professor Rolando Hinojosa-Smith. Paredes, 82, is a founder of Mexican American studies, border studies and the post-modern movement in anthropology.

    President Larry R. Faulkner of The University of Texas at Austin and UT System Chancellor William H. Cunningham will be among university officials honoring the academic achievements of about 300 star students in the Rio Grande Valley on Nov. 19.

    Dr. Carl Anderson can't remember exactly when he realized he was Santa Claus. It may have been one day in 1978 when he was crossing the street at 26th and Guadalupe like any other bearded young Austinite. A group of nearby schoolchildren yelled, 'Hey, Look! There's Santa Claus,' and practically mobbed him.
  • Nov. 13Paeman to speak at UT Austin about European Union’s future
    The European Union's ambassador to the United States, His Excellency Hugo Paemen, will speak on Nov. 17 at The University of Texas at Austin's Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. His topic is "The European Union and its Agenda for the Next Millennium: EU-US Partnership, EU Enlargement and the EURO."
  • Nov. 12Writing fellowship deadline set for January
    The deadline for applying for the Dobie-Paisano writing fellowships is Jan. 22, 1999. Sponsored by the Texas Institute of Letters and The University of Texas at Austin, the fellowships offer six months in residence at the late J. Frank Dobie's ranch near Austin.
  • Nov. 12Regents vote to reopen UT Austin Tower observation deck
    A recommendation to reopen the Tower observation deck at The University of Texas at Austin was approved Thursday (Nov. 12) by the UT System Board of Regents. Public tours are expected to begin by the end of next spring.

    As the world watches with renewed interest the activities of Sen. John Glenn and the Space Shuttle Discovery, researchers at The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy are awaiting today's scheduled return of Discovery, focusing on an experiment under way aboard the mission that may help UT researchers save lives back on Earth by developing more effective drugs to fight cancer.

    Dr. Amÿrico Paredes, professor emeritus at The University of Texas at Austin, will be one of two Texas authors to receive lifetime achievement awards Nov. 14 at the Capitol during the opening session for the Texas Book Festival.
  • Nov. 3Campanella and Navrštil named Outstanding Students at UT Austin
    Dee Campanella, a graduate of Plano high school and now a senior public relations major at The University of Texas at Austin, has received one of two Outstanding Student Awards from the UT Parents' Association. This annual award recognizes outstanding student leaders who are active both on campus and in the community.
  • Oct. 30Cortÿs to speak about community organizing
    Ernesto Cortÿs, Jr., Southwest regional director of the Industrial Areas Foundation, will speak at The University of Texas at Austin campus on Tuesday (Nov. 3) on the topic, "Community Organizing in the 21st Century."
