| Nov. 30 | UT Austin appoints new dean of fine arts Dr. Robert Freeman, an accomplished pianist and musicologist who served as director of the prestigious Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester for 24 years, has been named dean of the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin. His appointment is effective Jan. 16, 2000. |
| Nov. 29 | Advanced tech from UT Austin streamlines prototype Houston Metro bus It's not a magic bus. But a city bus being overhauled and modified by engineering wizards at The University of Texas at Austin may wind up cutting fuel use, improving air quality, reducing noise and greatly diminishing wear and tear on city streets. Like a magic bus, a certain amount of levitation is involved: the vehicle uses magnetic fields to float a key portion of the engine in mid-air. |
| Nov. 22 | Lawrence Speck resigns as dean of the UT Austin School of Architecture Lawrence W. Speck, dean of the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin, announced Monday that he is stepping down as dean. He cited his disappointment in circumstances he viewed as leading to the resignation of architects commissioned to design the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art on campus. He will remain on the UT Austin faculty. |
| Nov. 16 | UT Austin president will visit San Antonio high schools Wednesday President Larry R. Faulkner of The University of Texas at Austin and two teams of administrators will visit six San Antonio high schools on Wednesday (Nov. 17) encouraging top academic seniors to pursue a college education and to apply for Longhorn Opportunity Scholarships (LOS) designated for their schools. |
| Nov. 16 | Blanton Museum design architects resign commission The University of Texas at Austin Tuesday (Nov. 16) announced that Herzog & de Meuron have resigned their commission as design architects for the planned Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art. The architects indicated that their decision was based on their judgment that it would not be practical to bridge differences over the interpretation of the project in the context of the Campus Master Plan. The plan was adopted by the UT System Board of Regents in 1996 to guide future development of the campus. |
| Nov. 15 | UT Austin researchers developing needle-free insulin delivery system A breakthrough system that delivers insulin to diabetics without using needles is being developed by researchers at The University of Texas at Austin and DelRx, a New Jersey pharmaceutical company. Roughly similar to an inhaler, the system is ready for large-scale clinical trials, according to Dr. Bill Williams, associate professor in the College of Pharmacy. |
