    The following is a joint statement by William H. Cunningham, Chancellor of The University of Texas System and Larry R. Faulkner, President of The University of Texas at Austin, in response to an invitation to debate the cancellation of the Feb. 1 planned lecture by Dr. Henry Kissinger:
  • Jan. 312000 Texas Excellence Teaching Award recipients named
    "The purpose of the Texas Excellence Teaching Awards is to encourage quality teaching at the University," said Kim Gundersen, coordinator of Student Relations at the Ex-Students' Association, which sponsors and co-funds the awards. "The awards recognize individuals whose teaching and personal relations with students have had effective, positive influence on the lives and educational experience of students.
  • Jan. 28Texas State Historical Association continues rich tradition with 104th annual meeting
    The 104th annual meeting of the Texas State Historical Association, which is based at The University of Texas at Austin, will be held in Austin this March. Since its inception in 1897, the meeting has grown to contain more than 40 sessions on a variety of topics. Panels, auctions, book exhibits, book signings, receptions and banquets provide something for everyone interested in Texas history, geography and culture. The event will be March 2-4 at the Renaissance Hotel.
  • Jan. 28Signing of Southern African Large Telescope agreement marks major milestone
    An agreement was signed this week, formalizing the Hobby¬Eberly Telescope Board of Directors' participation in the design and construction of a $16.5 million Southern African Large Telescope observatory, to be built at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Sutherland, South Africa.

  • Jan. 27New defibrillation devices on UT Austin campus could improve outcomes for cardiac arrest victims
    The University of Texas at Austin is placing 20 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in campus police cars and other UT Austin facilities. The devices deliver an electric shock to restore normal functioning of the heartbeat. Their presence on campus could shave at least one to three precious minutes off the time it takes to respond to victims of heart attacks or other incidents of cardiac arrest, substantially improving survival rates.

    The thousands of engineers, developers, and managers in Austin's high tech community who are bursting with ideas for new businesses now have a forum to help turn those ideas into viable businesses. The University of Texas at Austin, the venture capital and investor community, and those who advise entrepreneurs have joined together to create a series of workshops, called From Idea to IPO®, to help these idea generators continue the phenomenal growth of Austin's high tech economy.

    Dr. Scott Tinker has been named director of the Bureau of Economic Geology at UT Austin.
  • Jan. 25EPA awards $3.65 million to UT Austin, consortium of universities to examine air quality in Houston
    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) today awarded $3.65 million to a consortium of universities led by The University of Texas at Austin to examine air quality in Houston. Houston recently surpassed Los Angeles as the city with the worst ozone concentrations in the United States and has been designated one of six particulate matter "supersites" by the EPA.

    Bolstering the University's commitment to the New Texas Economy, UT Austin President Larry R. Faulkner today (Jan. 18) announced the establishment of the Texas Evening MBA Program (TEMBA) in the Graduate School of Business.

    Dean Ellen Wartella of the College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin has named J. Stewart Vanderwilt as KUT Radio's new general manager, effective Feb. 14.
