Dr. Mark A. Estelle, a professor in the molecular, cellular and developmental biology section of the College of Natural Sciences, will lead a three-year research project focusing on a plant hormone involved in the regulation of virtually every aspect of the development of higher plant species. |
| Sept. 26 | UT Austin engineering professor wins national science award
Dr. Kara Kockleman has received a $200,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award to develop a better system of computer modeling to be used for transportation and urban planning. Kockleman, 31, is an assistant professor of civil engineering and transportation at The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering. |
| Sept. 26 | Indian writers to visit University of Texas at Austin
Three acclaimed writers from India will visit the Center for Asian Studies at The University of Texas at Austin Oct. 6-7. C. S. Lakshmi, M. T. Vasudevan Nair and Sunil Gangopadhyay will participate in a two-day conference, "One River, Many Streams: Writing from India 2000." The conference will include academic sessions on translation and Indian writing, as well as readings from the authors' works in Tamil, Bengali and Malayalam. |

The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering will host the first Texas Clean Air Conference on Oct. 12-13 at the J. J. Pickle Research Campus at 10100 Burnet Road. The conference will feature a cross section of Texas leaders discussing the influence of air pollution on Texas health, economy and environment. |

Dr. Camille Parmesan, an assistant professor of biology at The University of Texas at Austin and an expert on non-migratory butterfly species, has worked with world climate experts to document new evidence of global warming. The research will be featured in the Sept. 22 issue of the journal Science. |
