President Larry R. Faulkner of The University of Texas at Austin and Executive Vice Chancellor Ed Sharpe of the UT System will visit top academic students in Brownsville high schools Tuesday morning (Nov. 21) before attending the Valley Honors Banquet Tuesday night. At the banquet, 300 outstanding students and guests from throughout the Rio Grande Valley will be recognized.

Policy issues relevant to communities of color will be the focus of a one-day conference at The University of Texas at Austin on Friday (Nov. 17). Registration for the conference at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs is free and open to the public.

Adding waste toner to make highway asphalt more durable earned two University of Texas at Austin engineers a place on the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) list of Top 10 Research Findings or Innovations for 2000. The award is based on "substantial current and future value to the Texas Department of Transportation and the taxpayers of Texas."

Dr. Karen K. Uhlenbeck, a professor of mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the National Medal of Science. She is one of 12 renowned American scientists and engineers to receive the honor, which will be presented at an awards dinner scheduled for Friday (Dec. 1) in Washington, D.C.

Thirty individual high school students and 18 student teams from around the country are participating in the regional competitions of the Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition. The University of Texas at Austin is hosting one of six regional competitions, scheduled Friday through Sunday (Nov. 17-19) at the Joe C. Thompson Conference Center. Five Texas students are competing.
