Uhlenbeck, a professor of mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the National Medal of Science. She is one of 12 renowned American scientists and engineers to receive the honor, which will be presented at an awards dinner scheduled for Friday (Dec. 1) in Washington, D.C. |
| Nov. 2 | UT Austin hosts annual Siemens Science and Technology Competition Five Texas high school students have been selected to compete in the regional Siemens Westinghouse Science & Technology Competition to be held at The University of Texas at Austin. UT Austin will assist in judging, planning and administering one of six regional competitions to be held nationwide. |

Harrington of Amarillo will be used to create an international fellowship program to enhance the competitiveness of The University of Texas at Austin in attracting talented faculty and graduate students, University officials announced today. |
| Nov. 1 | Public tribute at UT Austin on Nov. 14 to honor Charles Alan Wright The University of Texas at Austin School of Law on Nov. 14 will pay a special tribute to the late Charles Alan Wright, a UT Austin law professor and one of the nation's leading authorities on the federal courts and the U.S. Constitution. Wright was 72 when he died on July 7 at a local Austin hospital. |

Updegrove, who has been the chief information officer at Yale University for the past four years, has accepted the position of vice president for information technology at The University of Texas at Austin. The appointment was announced Tuesday (Oct. 31) and is effective Jan. 1, 2001. |
| Oct. 27 | “Watering” Mopac: UT Austin College of Engineering research on highway runoff wins award Austin motorists may recall an odd sight along Mopac Boulevard in 1995 when researchers at The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering appeared to be "watering" the roadway instead of the grass. Their rainfall simulation study actually represented crucial research on highway runoff, and it has been honored by the American Society of Civil Engineers. |
