Mrs. Duren was more than a housemother. She was always available to give advice, love, and serve as a role model not only for the residents, but also to the black male stuudents from the black coop who came to share our dinner every evening.
Mrs. Duren and the residents were the best family I had. Thank you.

AUSTIN, Texas—When black students at The University of Texas at Austin were excluded from sports programs, organizations and other student activities, when black students were not welcome in Guadalupe Street stores and restaurants, Almetris Marsh Duren was there for them, providing emotional support.
