Truman Scholarship awarded to student from The University of Texas at AustinMarch 30, 2004 AUSTIN, Texas—Lauren Lien, a junior majoring in Government and Humanities at The University of Texas at Austin, has been named one of 77 winners nationally of $26,000 scholarships awarded by the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Lien, an Arlington native, has interned with U.S. Representatives Nick Lampson and Martin Frost, has worked with Amnesty International and tutored universityemployees preparing for the Graduate Equivalency Diploma. Lien has participatedin peer mentoring programs and is a member of Feeding the Homeless, a studentgroup which provides meals to area homeless people. She plans to pursue graduatedegrees in law and public policy. The Scholars were selected from among 609 candidates nominated by 300 colleges and universities. Each scholarship provides $2,000 for the senior year and $24,000for two or three years of graduate study. Scholars also receive priority admissionand supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadershiptraining, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunitieswithin the federal government. Recipients must be U.S. citizens, have outstandingleadership potential and communication skills, be in the top quarter of theirclass and be committed to careers in government or the not-for-profit sector. The Truman Scholarship Foundation was established by Congress in 1975 as thefederal memorial to the nation's 33rd President. The Foundation awardsscholarships for college students to attend graduate school in preparation forcareers ingovernment or elsewhere in public service. The activities of the Foundation aresupported by a special trust fund in the U.S. Treasury. There have been 2,330Truman Scholars elected since the first awards were made in 1977.
