AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Austin will reimburse all new degree-seeking international students who must pay a $100 fee required by the Department of Homeland Security.
The fee is being assessed to support the Student Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) created by the Department of Homeland Security to electronically track international students enrolled at U.S. educational institutions. Most students enrolled as of last Sept. 1 do not have to pay the fee.
Both graduate and undergraduate students intending to study for a degree will be reimbursed $100 after enrolling. The reimbursement is intended to ameliorate one of the many hurdles international students now encounter when choosing to study in the United States.
“International students make extremely valuable contributions to American universities,” said Dr. Larry R. Faulkner, president of The University of Texas at Austin, “and their participation does much to broaden international understanding of America. By covering the SEVIS fee for those who select The University of Texas, we reinforce our welcome to them and we eliminate the new financial barrier to their coming here.”
