Engineering school ranked third best producer of minority engineersJuly 12, 2005 AUSTIN, Texas—The University of Texas at Austin College of Engineering has been named a top national producer of minority engineering undergraduates by Black Issues in Higher Education magazine. The university ranked third nationally among the magazine’s Top 100 producers of minority engineering undergraduates. The list was published in the magazine’s June 2 issue. “I am thrilled that our college is attracting some of the best and brightest minority students and preparing them to make an impact on society,” said Dean Ben Streetman of the College of Engineering. “I believe that it is essential for us to provide minority students with the opportunity and the tools to apply their talents to engineering.” The Top 100 list included three other Texas institutions of higher education among the higher rankings: Texas A&M University (20th), The University of Texas at El Paso (31st) and The University of Texas at San Antonio (49th). The University of California, Berkeley captured the top spot in this year’s rankings of total undergraduate engineering degrees earned by minorities. The rankings were based on analyses of U.S. Department of Education data for the 2003-04 academic year. Dr. Victor Borden, from Indiana University—Purdue University of Indianapolis, analyzed the data for degrees awarded to minorities overall, and to African American, American Indian, Asian American and Latino students.
