University of Texas at Austin graduate awarded Marshall Scholarship

AUSTIN, Texas—The Marshall Scholarship program has awarded University of Texas at Austin alumna Heidi Boutros a two-year scholarship to study international relations at the University of Oxford. Boutros, who graduated in 2004 with degrees in Plan II Honors and Government, is one of only 43 scholars from across the nation who received the honor.

After earning her master’s degree from Oxford, Boutros plans to attend law school and pursue a career prosecuting criminal civil rights violations for the United States Department of Justice. Boutros has been deeply committed to human rights, working with the International Justice Mission to rescue bonded slaves in India, investigating prison conditions in Moscow and assisting in former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic’s U.N. trial for war crimes and genocide. Since graduation, she has worked for the F.B.I. as an analyst on a drug trafficking and money laundering task force.

While attending The University of Texas at Austin, Boutros helped draft the school’s first academic code of conduct and recorded textbooks on tape for blind and learning-disabled students. She earned numerous awards and accolades, including the distinguished Truman Scholarship for leadership, academic achievement and public service.

The Marshall Scholarships began in 1953 and provide American students with the opportunity to attend graduate school at a top British university. The British government pays for all expenses.
