Burt appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education as member of Advisory Committee on Student Financial AssistanceJanuary 30, 2006 AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Larry Burt, associate vice president and director of student financial services at The University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Education to serve on the nation’s Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance. The committee provides advice to the U.S. Congress and to Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings on student financial aid matters, including federal, state and institutional programs of postsecondary student assistance. Burt’s term on the committee will run through Sept. 30, 2008. “I am extremely pleased and very excited about this opportunity to serve Texas families through my appointment to the Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance,” Burt said. “One of the purposes of the advisory committee is to increase access to higher education for low and moderate income students. With the Texas College Money financial aid calculator soon to be available for all institutions in the state of Texas, our state may have a model to bring to the national level a tool that can address the critical issue of providing early financial aid awareness to low and moderate income families, not only in Texas but across the country.” The Advisory Committee on Student Financial Assistance, established by the Congress of the United States with the enactment of the Higher Education Amendments of 1986, provides technical expertise and makes recommendations toward improving federal financial aid programs, as well as access and persistence to postsecondary education for low- and middle-income students.
