Mooov-In 2006 provides welcoming gesture to new and incoming students at The University of Texas at Austin

AUSTIN, Texas—William Powers Jr., president of The University of Texas at Austin, will be among volunteers who will help new and returning students haul their suitcases, boxes and other belongings into residence halls on Aug. 25, 26 and 27 as part of Mooov-In 2006.

Powers will be among the volunteers working at Kinsolving Residence Hall on Whitis Street, north of Dean Keeton Street, at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 25.

Pamela Chee, president of the University Residence Hall Association, which sponsors the annual project, said Mooov-In helps establish “a sense of community” on campus. It also provides an opportunity for new students and their parents to meet some members of the faculty, administration and staff before the start of classes on Aug. 30.

“Mooov-In is a great opportunity for students, faculty and staff to welcome new students and their parents to our community,” said Powers. “I deeply appreciate the hard work and dedication of those who have volunteered to make sure the newest members of The University of Texas at Austin family receive a warm and heartfelt welcome to the campus.”

The residence halls participating in Mooov-In this year include Jester Center, Kinsolving/Whitis Court halls, Simkins Hall, San Jacinto Hall, Brackenridge/Roberts/Prather/Moore-Hill halls and Andrews/Blanton/Carothers/Littlefield halls.

The tradition takes university volunteers—Leadership Week student participants and university faculty and staff —to the campus residence halls to greet the students and their parents and offer their help. The volunteers will work in shifts helping the new arrivals to unload belongings outside residence halls and providing directions to rooms where the students will live.

Preparing for the summer heat, Leadership Week volunteers also will set up water stations during Mooov-In to help new and other incoming students stay refreshed during the moving process.
