AUSTIN, Texas — Two students in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin won first place in an international student design competition, hosted by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) and sponsored by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Historic Resources Committee.

Graduate architecture students Brian Bedrosian and William Huie were awarded first place for their submission, "Looking into the Distance," (PDF, download Adobe Reader) in the competition, Preservation as Provocation: Re-Thinking Kahn's Salk Institute.

The goal of the competition was for architecture students to submit a design for the preservation of the Louis H. Kahn's Salk Institute for Biological Studies, in La Jolla, Calif., while "rethinking current conventions about composition, construction and building performance. "

"Being awarded first place in this competition is a wonderful honor not only for our students, but for our architecture program," said Fritz Steiner, dean of the School of Architecture. "It attests to the ability of our students to compete on an international level."

The competition drew 122 entries from across the country. The students will receive $3,500 and their faculty sponsor, David Heymann, will receive $1,500. Five honorable mentions were also awarded.

The winning projects will be on display at the ACSA annual meeting in New Orleans in March 2010, and at the AIA national convention in Miami in June 2010.
