The University of Texas at Austin to Open East Texas Admissions Center in Longview

Aug. 26, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas — William Powers Jr., president of The University of Texas at Austin, and other university officials will participate in the opening of the university's new East Texas Admissions Center in Longview, Texas, which begins at 10 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 28.

The 1,980-square-foot center on the first floor of the Austin Bank Building, 911 W. Loop 281 in Longview, will offer area students access to admissions counselors who can provide information about the university and assist them with the application process, said Mario Villa, director of the new center. The center hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

"We are very excited to bring our services to this part of the state and to establish a more significant presence here among the high schools, community colleges and educational outreach services," said Villa, who received his bachelor of arts and his master of education degrees from The University of Texas at Austin. Villa was an admissions counselor for the university since 2008, responsible for working with students throughout the East Texas area.

Powers said the East Texas Admissions Center would play an important role in bringing to the university top students and future leaders from that area of the state.

"I look forward to visiting with students and their families in Longview and the opportunity to tell them about the outstanding educational and life experiences awaiting those who choose to attend The University of Texas at Austin," Powers said.

"From our previous expansions, we know that our local offices afford students and the university the opportunity to benefit from closer relationships and more directed assistance to those who seek to attend The University of Texas at Austin," said Dr. Kedra Ishop, vice provost and director of admissions. "The East Texas Admissions Center is there for you and we look forward to seeing you in your schools and communities."

The university also has admissions centers in Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Lubbock, the Rio Grande Valley and New York.

Other university officials will provide information to prospective students and their parents about financial aid, academic opportunities, housing and food services and other topics. A representative of the Texas Exes alumni association also will attend the ceremony.
