Media Advisory: Media Invited to Preview Next Great Space Telescope

March 4, 2013

Event: Interview opportunities with astronomers from The University of Texas and NASA alongside a full-scale model of NASA’s next great space telescope

When: March 6-8, by appointment

Where: Outside the Long Center for the Performing Arts, 701 W. Riverside Drive, Austin

Background: University of Texas at Austin astronomers Karl Gebhardt, Sarah Tuttle and Steven Finkelstein are helping NASA bring their next great space telescope to Austin for the SXSW Gaming Expo in the form of a full-scale model that is the size of a tennis court and 4 stories high.

Media are invited March 6-8, by appointment, to interview UT Austin and NASA astronomers and take photos and film of the telescope model before it opens to the public.

The James Webb Space Telescope model will be set up outdoors next to the Long Center. An adjacent tent will host free public talks by UT astronomers and many more events March 8-10.

Other events include a talk from Nobel Prize-winning astronomer John Mather and scientists from MIT and elsewhere; nightly star parties hosted by local astronomy clubs; and an attempt at breaking the Guinness Book record for the world’s largest astronomy lesson.

Full details, including a schedule of public events March 8-10, are available at the James Webb Space Telescope SXSW site.
