Admissions
All students interested in applying for graduate study in Nursing at the University of Texas at Austin must meet the admission requirements established by the University’s Office of Graduate Studies and the School of Nursing. Applicants are expected to be graduates of accredited colleges or universities. Below are the minimum requirements for admission.
Alternate Entry MSN Program
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an area other than Nursing
- A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in upper-division work (junior- and senior-level courses) and in any graduate work previously completed
- Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the past five years (School code: 6882). No exceptions apply.
- Completion of all prerequisite courses at the time of summer enrollment (not the time of application)
- Three Electronic Letters of Recommendation forms- at the time of application you must provide the name, position, and email address for three recommenders. Recommenders are sent an email with instructions on completing the recommendation. *At minimum one reference must be from a healthcare professional, such as a nurse, physician, nurse practitioner or clinical nurse specialist.

- Admission for Summer term only
*Applicants to the AE-MSN program are encouraged to have volunteer or work experience in a healthcare related field.
Master of Science in Nursing Program
Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree OR Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma AND a non-nursing bachelor’s degree (BS/BA)
- A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in upper-division work (junior- and senior- level courses) and in any graduate work already completed
- Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years (School code: 6882)
- Current Texas RN licensure
- Selection of “Nursing” as major choice on the online application for admission (Code 671610)
- Admission for Fall semester only

Alternate Entry PhD Program
Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in an area other than Nursing
- A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in upper-division work (junior- and senior-level courses) and in any graduate work previously completed
- Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within the past five years (School code: 6882). No exceptions apply.

PhD Program
Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree and/or Master of Science in Nursing degree OR Associate Degree in Nursing or Nursing Diploma AND a non-nursing bachelor’s or master’s degree
- A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in upper-division work (junior- and senior- level courses) and in any graduate work already completed
- Completion of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) within past five years (School code: 6882)
- Current Texas RN licensure
- Selection of “Nursing-PhD” as major choice on the online application for admission (Code 671620)
- Admission for Fall semester only
Post-Master’s Certificate Program
Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited institution
- A GPA of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or comparable GPA in MSN program
- Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is not required.
- Current Texas RN licensure
- Applicants to the Family Nurse Practitioner program must have two years full-time work experience as an RN completed at the time of application for admission-December 1.
- Applicants to the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program must have one year full-time work experience as an RN with children/adolescents completed at the time of application-December 1.
