ABSTRACT: The University of Texas recently established a new Imaging Research Center.  The centerpiece research instrument at the Center is a 3.0 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, made by GE.  This is the most powerful MRI scanner currently available in the Austin area and the only such instrument in central Texas dedicated for use in research.  The talk will summarize the basic operations of an MRI scanner, some of the advantages and disadvantages of magnetic resonance imaging, and areas of research that faculty can take advantage of with the use of this new facility.
